Stevedore Damage to Ship or Cargo in Bangladesh, Notice, Evidence and File Routing
Contact damage and cargo-handling damage are operational events first. The claim path depends on notice, photographs, SOF language and who was actually instructed to work the cargo.
Grab contact, hatch-coaming damage, forklift impact and torn bags all appear on Bangladesh calls. The commercial argument comes later. The operational duty is to preserve a clean notice trail while the vessel is still in a position to record facts. Preserve evidence early; notice periods and survey practice depend on the fixture and local procedure for that incident.
Immediate file actions
Record time, location on board, and working party identity as known; Photograph damage and surrounding working conditions; Enter a factual SOF entry, avoid legal conclusions in the log extract; Notify the appointing principal and, where relevant, P&I correspondent promptly; Request survey attendance if the principal so instructs.
Who is not automatically liable in the agent’s narrative
CPA is not the stevedore and does not perform cargo handling. Cargo-working parties are engaged under arrangements that depend on terminal, receiver and commercial contracts. The agent’s job is coordination and reporting under appointment, not absorbing stevedore liability in correspondence.
Evidence that later disputes actually use
Clear photos with timestamps, undisturbed damage before cosmetic repair, and a survey report that separates ship damage from cargo condition are more useful than long opinion emails. If rectification is approved, keep the work order and completion evidence in the same file.
Protective agency for owners can compare the nominated agent’s damage narrative against SOF and survey records. That is a records review, not a second stevedoring contract.
Control language
Written approval before repair cost. Written instruction before third-party attendance. No public guarantee of recovery outcomes. Confirm current terminal and safety requirements for the berth or anchorage where the event occurred.
Do not delay photographs for convenience. Once cargo work continues over a contact point, the visual record degrades. The same applies to torn bags or contaminated parcels that will be diluted into a larger discharge.
Repair quotations should wait for principal approval even when a provider is already on the jetty. Speed without authority creates a second dispute on top of the damage event.

Send the relevant charterparty or MOA, notices, SOF, invoices, claim correspondence, vessel schedule and P&I or insurer contact. CPA can preserve records and coordinate local attendance; legal advice, security and court action remain with appointed counsel and insurers.
